Advice/Memory: “While there are several great memories to share, the one that I hold near and dear to my heart was the First Annual Lt. Clark Perkins Memorial Run. As the last remaining class who volunteered with Clark, I felt it was my/our obligation to continue on his legendary legacy for generations to come. Although most of the responsibility fell on me and Basher to pull it off, and to the surprise of many of the older members, we got it done and the run was a tremendous success - raising over $20,000 in Clark's honor. My second fondest memory would have to be the 2019 Clambake - highly unlikely it will ever be topped.
In terms of advice, it's pretty simple: take the challenge head on and don't give up. I broke my hand I had to take IFO twice but it was the best decision I made. This is such a rare and incredible opportunity to be an integral part of Hamilton's community and it is a bond with the village that lasts a lifetime. Do the training, show up to calls, show up to monthly meetings and avoid going on your phone, respect the elders, keep your gear and the trucks clean, but most importantly be proud to wear the job shirt and represent such an amazing community. Even if the path of life leads you outside of the fire service, the memories and friends you will make at HFD will be a part of you forever, and the ability to operate under a chain of command is a skill that will translate into all aspects of work, relationships and life. “

Advice/Memory: “I saw a guy in Heathrow Airport wearing a fire department shirt. I quickly found out that he had been an upstate New York firefighter as well as an active duty Marine and Sam Usborne was his FF1 instructor; he was the guy who backed the tanker into the living room and dumped the tank (he said it was legendary). Also, the Colgate alumnus i met sitting next to at a bar in Montana whose most memorable professor was my first attempt at CPR. “

Advice/Memory: “Clam bakes and quarters, weekly meetings and deer d*ck, late nights studying in the department waiting for that call, football in dresses, beepers going off in class, running down the hill trying to wave down a car, not realizing I was stepping on the siren my first time riding shotgun, that wild excitement in the truck as everyone grabs walkie-talkies, flashlights, and throws on their air packs. Standing in the freezing cold at midnight as the driver flees the scene of the crash. Pulling a little girl in her car seat out the back of a crumpled car. Stadium raise training. Setting up fans to clear the smoke out of Frank. False alarm after false alarm at the movie theatre. Soak it all in, it goes fast. “

Advice/Memory: “The highlights of my time with HFD are the lasting friendships I made with the locals, many of whom remain close friends. I learned a great deal about true friendship and brotherhood from them.
My only advice is don’t stop listening to the old(er) guys. You might learn something that will save your life or another’s.“
